I wanted to get into the world of orienteering, so I chose that I’d go straight to the top. This book IS full of useful information, but I find that I was able to skip around lacking losing any of the book’s substance.

Very excellent basic map & compass course. Proper training in the military gave me a excellent effective knowledge and the confidence to use it. This book will help instill persons same principles.

I bought this book for my daughter, now studying in Japan. Turns out that it’s not simple to determine which way trains, etc. are going on train stations so she questioned for a compass. Along with the compass I got her a book on both compass and map reading. The book looks like it covers what one needs to know pretty well. As a pilot & architect (and ex- Boy Scout)I’m pretty familiar with the theme but as these skills are not as intuitive as one might expect learning them with the use of this tiny book is a pretty excellent choice. Besides, what to do when the GPS doesn’t work, or the batteries run out…?

This is a must have for anyone looking for a resource that is simple to read and learn. Excellent graphics and tips on using a variety compasses. This book covers the gamut from identifying what is orienteering, buying a compass, understanding triangulation, and sample exercises.
