Men are rediscovering the importance of the spiritual life. And Father Larry Richards is helping them do it. While some writers apply a one-size-fits-all approach to the Christian life, Father Richards draws on his many years of ministry and his own experience as a man to inspire additional men as men.
In Be a Man!, he recounts his struggles to learn right manhood, as well as the inspiring tales of others he has served in his decades as a priest. He tells men how to focus on the right goal, how to live as a beloved son of God, of the need to acknowledge one’s faults and to live according to the Holy Spirit, to be a man of right like and of wisdom, to appreciate properly the differences between men and women, to pursue consecration, and to make a difference in the world. Not preachy but direct, Father Richards challenges men to be strong, lacking putting on a mask of fake might or machismo. He calls men to admit their weaknesses and limitations, while urging them to find might in faith and genuine like to overcome their sins and faults.
Although a celibate priest, he minces no words when it comes to the place of sexuality for the unmarried man as well as for the married man. He shows that right manliness is not opposed to like but thrives on it. Father Richards stresses that a relationship with Christ reveals the meaning of a man’s life and his identity as a man. He inspires men to become the right heroes they long to be men of authentic courage, compassion and integrity. This is a highly readable book for men by a man who knows how to talk to men about the things that matter most.
Fr. Larry Richards, a well loved speaker at men s conferences around the country, is the pastor of an inner city parish in Erie, PA. He hosts his own daily national radio show on Significant Radio, and is the founder of “The Reason for Our Hope Foundation”.
“Father Larry talks straight to men in his own manly style. He pulls no spiritual punches-I don’t reflect he knows how to! He pokes, pushes, sometimes verbally slaps men into being God’s men, all with an obvious like for them and faith in their ability to persevere to heaven.”
-Dr. Ray Guarendi, Psychologist, National Syndicated Radio Host, and Leader

I’m only reading this book as part of a book discussion group. After having read about half of the book I can say I would not recommend it. Some people I know are super-religious and into the mysterious. For them this book is significant. For me it is not.

I had a hard time with Larry’s book. A guy who goes into the Seminary at such a young age and not having any right experience with marriage, like and a broken heart of rejection of some of the woman a man has loved. Larry really hasn’t really seen the real life of man. I am not adage being a celibate is not excellent, it just doesn’t give you a right look at life as a regular man struggling to support a family tree raising kids and trying to be a follower of Christ’s message.

Presumably a reasonable person would agree that to be a excellent man you also have to be a excellent citizen as well. In a pluralistic society that means not basing your judgments, or your politics, on wishing additional people ill. It is a excellent thing to try to shore up a healthy masculinity. But it is another thing entirely, to try to feel like a holy hunk on the basis of putting additional people down. Therefore, also, it is one thing for conservative Catholics to have their own views on sexuality. But it is thus reasonably another thing to engage in the most hideous Schadenfreude in trying to paint gay people as inexorably miserable. First, this flies in the face of millions of pleased healthy gay people in the world. Sociologically gay people regularly seem to be more pleased than straight parents. That is adage nothing against straight parents, but it is adage something for gay people. Second, it is a simple calumny to imply, as this ridiculously prejudiced leader does throughout his book, that anyone that does not share his views, especially gay people, are therefore embodying “emptiness” as he sees it. But there is even worse from this leader. He seems to imply in the book that the minority of gay people, who take place to suffer from the disease AIDS, as exemplified by a few that he has personally known, are evocations of this “emptiness”. And that therefore they are somehow representative of gay people generally in his benighted view. This is really ghoulish presumption, and it will surely appear silly to any reasonable person. Real manliness, in contradistinction to the odd blandishments of this man’s views come from a compassionate savvy, which is reasonably different than diva-like judgments that this book everywhere exhibits.

A fantastic book for persons years of puberty and adolescence.
I really recomended. It is a fantastic content and it is not simple to read, not very apealing to a young man and needs a motivational work before giving it.
Realy recommended.

I received this book as a gift for attending an ACTS refuge. After reading the first 6 Chapters I accidently left the book on an airplane while in route to Afghanistan. I quickly ordered another copy. As a “cradle Catholic” I am amazed at how much I do not know about my faith. Father Larry’s book is very inspirational and motivated me to learn more about my faith. I refer to guides he has at the end of every chapter and look forwards to being the MAN God wanted me to be. Highly recommend this book for Catholic and non men that are looking to find their way.
