The Bait of Satan by John Bevere
P1 Introduction
“Anyone who has trapped animals knows a trap needs one of two things to be successful. It must be hidden,”
I have trapped mice and skunks successfully and neither trap needs to be hidden. When I trap fish I find that depending on the type of fish, the trap or hook usually needs to be hidden but not permanently, I have caught fish with a bare hook. The leader isn’t much of a trapper and doesn’t know what he is talking about.
P7 The Illusory Trap
a) “The Greek word for “offend” in Luke 17:1 comes from the word skandalon.”…Hence the word signifies laying a trap in a name’s way.
b) On Page 169 in the notes, the leader references two words “offence, offend”.
The word offence is an vital word to the leader but he chooses to poorly define the word here. To help know the word “offend” consider its translation in these different versions and then read the definition of the word according to the glossary.
Lu 17:1 (KJV) Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe [unto him], through whom they come!
Lu 17:1 (ASV) And he said unto his disciples, It is impossible but that occasions of stumbling should come; but woe unto him, through whom they come!
Lu 17:1 (BBE) And he said to his disciples, It is necessary for causes of distress to come about, but miserable is he by whom they come.
Lu 17:1 (DBY) And he said to his disciples, It cannot be but that offences come, but woe [to him] by whom they come!
Lu 17:1 (MKJV) And He said to the disciples, It is impossible but that offenses will come. But woe [to him] through whom they come!
Lu 17:1 (MNT) Jesus said to his disciples: “It is not possible but that occasions of stumbling should occur, but woe to him through whom they come!
Lu 17:1 (NKJV) Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe [to him] through whom they do come!
Lu 17:1 (RSV) And he said to his disciples, “Temptations to sin are sure to come; but woe to him by whom they come!
Lu 17:1 (TCNT) Jesus said to his disciples: “It is inevitable that there should be snares; yet alas for him who is answerable for them!
Lu 17:1 (WEB) He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no occasions of stumbling should come, but woe to him through whom they come!
Lu 17:1 (WNT) Jesus said to His disciples, “It is inevitable that causes of stumbling should come; but alas for him through whom they come!
Lu 17:1 (YLT) And he said unto the disciples, `It is impossible for the stumbling blocks not to come, but woe [to him] through whom they come;
Main Entry: of*fense Variant(s): or of*fence
Function: noun Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French, from Latin offensa, from feminine of offensus, past participle of offendere Date: 14th century
1 a obsolete : an act of stumbling b archaic : a cause or occasion of sin : stumbling block
2 : something that outrages the moral or physical senses
3 a : the act of attacking : assault b : the means or method of attacking or of attempting to score c : the offensive team or members of a team playing offensive positions d : scoring ability
4 a : the act of offensive or affronting b : the state of being insulted or morally outraged
5 a : a breach of a moral or social code : sin, misdeed b : an infraction of law; especially : misdemeanor
The leader is using an archaic and obsolete word and then poorly defining the word and the usage. To fail to properly define an archaic, obsolete word and then to continue to use the word lacking explanation is an egregious error.
c) “Offense is a tool of the devil to bring people into captivity…
And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, uncomplaining, in humility correcting persons who are in challenger, if God will perhaps grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare [entrapment] of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.” -2 Timothy 2:24-26, Emphasis Added
In the sentence “Offense is a tool of the devil” the leader is not clear in the meaning of `offense’ or perhaps he is just building a statement that is not entirely clear. The word `Offense is not establish in 2 Timothy. By following the sentence with a quote from 2 Timothy and using italics, the leader seems to be equating offense to persons who are in challenger (which is not textually supported). An offense may be a tool of the Devil, but Christians are regularly, and the leader is in this instance, quick to blame or give credit to the Devil where others really are at fault or due the credit.
d) “No matter what the scenario is, we can apportion all offended people into two major categories: (1) persons who have been treated unjustly or (2) persons who judge with all their hearts they have been wronged.”
In the margin in the book I wrote “A Lie” but perhaps that is too strong of a statement, perhaps this is just really poor logic on the part of the leader.
1) The leader says “we can apportion all offended people into two major categories:”
Example #1 Marry is offended: Suppose that Mary took a math test with 10 questions and was agreed a score of 90 because she missed question #10. Now suppose that question 10 was graded “unjustly” or incorrectly and that Mary’s answer was really right – therefore, Mary falls into Category (1) because she has been treated unjustly. Mary appears to be a pretty smart girl and in fact Mary reviews her answer on her test and sees that her answer is right – therefore, Mary falls into Category (2) because she believes with all of her heart that she has been wronged.
In this example, the leader’s statement is fake, incorrect, one-sided, or `A Lie’.
2) I judge a right, logical and a more proper statement by the leader might be `No matter what the scenario is, we can apportion all offended people into two major categories: 1) persons ho have been treated justly or 2) persons who have been treated unjustly.’ But it must be noted that each major category may have groups of people “who judge with all their hearts they have been wronged”. It may be further noted that the category of people “who judge with all their hearts they have been wronged” will fall into two groups a) persons who have been treated justly and b) persons who have been treated unjustly.
Pp7-8 The Heart’s Right Condition
a) “One way the enemy keeps a person in an offended state is to
keep the offense hidden, cloaked with pride.”
Once again the leader is blaming a name else “the enemy” for what reasonably regularly is a person’s fault. Most people don’t need the enemy, the Devil to raise up the sin of pride in their lives.
b) Once I was severely hurt by a couple of ministers. People would say, “I can’t judge they did this to you. Aren’t you hurt?”
I would quickly respond, “No, I am fine. I’m not hurt.” I knew it was
incorrect to be offended, so I denied and repressed it.”
The leader keeps using the word offended lacking defining exactly how he means the use of this archaic and obsolete word. There is nothing incorrect with using archaic and obsolete words, but if they are used then their use must be properly defined.
The leader says `I knew it was incorrect to be offended’ which by itself is an overbroad and may be an untrue statement when applied to different circumstances. Hopefully the leader meant something like `I knew it was incorrect to deny and to repress the facts of what had been done to me falsely’.
P9 The Cure
On page 9, I find the most worthwhile statement made in Chapter 1.
“If we do not deal with an offense, it will produce more fruit of sin,
such as bitterness, rage and resentment.”
Even though the leader still has not defined offense, its usage in this sentence is mostly clear and the statement is a right statement. If the leader used this truth to deal with the situation he mentions on p 8 above then pride would not have been a sin to him. If the leader used this truth to deal with the situation he describes in Chapter 4, then he would have stopped sin in its tracks. Here the leader expresses a fantastic truth, a guiding light principle, but sorry to say the leader fails to utilize and remember fantastic truths and as a replacement for deals with half-truths.
P10 See your right condition.
a) “Regularly when we are offended we see ourselves as victims and blame persons who have hurt us.”
Imagine that you are a 12 year ancient boy that has been sexually molested by your father and you read this statement. The truth is you would be a victim, the truth is it would be right to blame the person who hurt you, and finally you must deal with the abuse. The proper response would be “If we do not deal with an offense, it will produce more fruit of sin, such as bitterness, rage and resentment.” As a replacement for the leader offers that “we justify our bitterness”.
b) “When we blame others and defend our own position, we are blind.”
In the instance agreed above this statement would not be right – we would not be blind if we properly blamed the perpetrator for the crime and if we defended ourselves. The leader frequently makes overbroad statements or half-truths which results in a lie.
c) “When the Spirit of God shows us our sin, He permanently does it in such a way that it seems separate from us. This brings conviction, not condemnation.
In the margin by the leader’s statement I wrote `absurd!’ When the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin in our life he is building the sin very personal to us, he is convicting us personally at the core of our being of our real sin. The Holy Spirit may make it seem separate from us but the Holy Spirit doesn’t stop there, the Holy Spirit must make us know the truth, He must make sin real to us, he must convict us that we screwed up so that we may repent and be forgiven.
The Holy Spirit doesn’t try to make or sin separate, surreal, like something in a movie as the leader implies.
Pp 58-59 Hiding from reality.
P 58 A excellent definition for the word teknon is “one who is a son by mere fact of birth.”
P59 So, to place it simply, the Greek word teknon means “babies or immature sons,”
On page 58, the leader gives a excellent definition of the Greek word teknon then elaborates and supports the definition by giving examples that clarify and support his definition. Then on page 59, the leader very poorly redefines the Greek word teknon in contradiction to his excellent definition and full page of examples.
Synopsis:
On page 1 of the book, the leader makes an untrue statement of fact, this tale on the first page indicates that the leader does not know what he is talking about – setting the reader to question every statement that the leader will make in the remainder of his book.
On page 9 of the book, the leader makes the most profound statement to be establish in the first 6 Chapters of his book, but the leader fails to comprehend the statement’s significance or to apply this major truth to a major life situation he details in Chapters 4 and 5 – in additional words the leader seems to major on minor things and to minor on major things.
On pages 58 and 59 of the book, the leader gives a excellent definition of a Greed word, supports his definition by examples and then gives a contradicting definition of the same word – this exemplifies the leader’s inability to reflect and prompt himself logically.
Although there are parts of this book that are worthwhile, I do not recommend this book for the all-purpose reader.

Appealing book that is highly focussed on how we should react to offenses. It is helpful to study this book in a tiny group rather than just reading it.

This book is extremeley DAMAGING! I read this book in an efffort to grow closer to God, but finished up with an anxiety disorder and additional psychological hurt from staying in psychologically abusive relationships as prescribed by this book. Any book that opens with a tale about a “vision” of a Christian in hell should be immediately place down and subjected to hard. Another red flag is that if you follow the logic of this book, contradicting or questioning the book itself lands you in hell- much like the teachings of most cults. Reader beware: years after rejecting the doctrine, I am still living in dread of “offending” a name or “being offended” — taking actions to protect myself from abuse or turning down unwanted relationships. These are basic social skills that are learned in childhood and adolesence and keep normal people sane. Now, I have to relearn them while fighting the dread of hellfire and condemnation. As with all additional books in the Christian self-help genre, keep an eye out for the spirit of condemnation and additional well loved forms of manipulation and spiritual abuse. By the way, If you judge in the Holy Spirit, there are biblical precedents for “subjecting to (incorrect) power.” The crucifiction is one, but Jesus chose God’s timing to be subjected, he did not just submit to all the religious authorities in his life and hope for God’s protection. In these instances, people submit to incorrect power LED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, NOT AS A WAY OF LIFE. Reflect what would have happened if others took on this philosophy: if Elijah subjected to the evil power of Jezebel or Schadrach Meschach and Abednego had bowed to Nebachadnezzer’s idol, to say nothing of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the State of Alabama! There are precedents for disobedience led by the Holy Spirit or God’s law. Again theme all things to hard, and hold quick to what is excellent…

If you read this book, you need to be very careful and should also read additional books on spiritual abuse. This book is very close to being cultish, this is my strong warning. Be alert if your church leader requests you read this book lacking also recommending others, as this book could easily be used to justify spiritual abuse.
His basic point is that taking offense is the bait of satan to lure you to do incorrect things. There is some truth in this, one’s offended ego can be used to try to justify sin. But there is also fantastic danger in this teaching, in that it seems to teach that if one is EVER offended, it is your fault. For example, this book teaches that if I am offended by this book, (and I am) then it is my fault and I need to repent.
Jesus got offended sometimes and we should also. One reason I am offended by this book is that it can easily be used to “guilt” people who have done nothing incorrect.

John Bevere’s “Bait of Satan” is a wordy bit of twisted theology.
Bevere’s teachings include the following:
(1) If you give offense, you are incorrect.
(2) If you feel offended, you are incorrect.
(3) If you are a Christian, in all matters, you are at fault.
I saw the controversial reviews of this book, so I ordered a copy for review. The leader writes in the “self-authenticating” style of New Age literature. As for theology, it is far removed from traditional teachings, regardless of the reader’s religious affilition. It is more like the message establish in some kind of “store-front” church.
Preaching from some pulpit, to an audience not engaged in critical examination of an thought is distinctly different from offering the same thoughts to the all-purpose public who are not predisposed to accept a teaching HOOK-LINE & SINKER.
A critical honor between the leader’s teaching and the Gospel of Jesus Christ, is that Bevere teaches that the Christian ought to practice SELF-RELIANCE, and use personal power to SEE what Bevere refers to as “the Bait of Satan”. This teaching is not in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is that we should rely upon GOD in all things, and there is no commandment to seek out and identify machinations of the entity called Satan. To affirm Satan is to diminish the victory or Jesus Christ over death.
Even a tiny bit of rational thought will show us that it is absolutely impossible to live a life lacking either OFFENDING others, or being OFFENDED by others. The rational flaw in Bevere’s logic is that Jesus Christ was an OFFENSE to many, and many were OFFENDED by him.
With that fundamental fact customary, the unusual scenario now exists wherein John Bevere holds himself superior to Jesus Christ in his person, and superior to Jesus Christ in his teaching, and would address Jesus Christ concerning either GIVING OFFENSE, or TAKING OFFENSE.
We might question ourself, if Jesus Christ takes OFFENSE, is that incorrect?
If we OFFEND Jesus Christ, is Christ incorrect in taking offense?
If a name else OFFENDS Jesus Christ, are we incorrect for being possessed of enough simple reason to admit that a name is giving OFFENSE? [But here, in taking offense, Bevere teaches that you are incorrect.]
It is a bit of a contradictory theology, not un-like Lewis Carrol’s “Alice-In-Wonderland” where Alice encounters the Mad Queen.
The MAD part of Bevere’s theology, is that if you give OFFENSE, you’re incorrect. If you take OFFENSE, you’re incorrect.
The fact that Bevere connects all of this to the essential “MAD QUEEN”/boogeyman, Satan, would seem to argue that Jesus Christ had not already freed man from bondage. In fact, it would be honest to state that if man must fight with Satan, then Jesus Christ failed to defeat Satan by his living sacrifice.
To state this plainly but, would be to acknowledge the power of Jesus Christ, and disempower John Bevere. Since one cannot acknowledge the power of Jesus Christ over Satan and simultaneously teach that Satan has power, an irrational contrivance is necessary. Bevere’s is simply to side-step the issue, and to substitute his teachings for persons of the Master. In such a scenario, Bevere himself, holds the keys to defeating Satan, whereas Jesus Christ, in Bevere’s theology, is simply a convenient personality in the background, whose Gospel is secondary to the essential power, which is John Bevere’s “Bait of Satan”
The unfortunate aspect of this is that there permanently seem to be people who prefer to be like actual sheep. Such people lose their way in cults, and become followers of some “personality” or additional, whose word in all things is final. They preach from some pulpit, virtually as a dictator of sorts, concerning ALL-THINGS-CHRISTIAN. No man can teach both Christ and Satan at the same time. If we acknowledge that Satan has power, we are denying Christ. If we teach Jesus Christ, we are denying Satan. No man can serve two masters.
Nobody needs teachings about Satan. The Lamb of God sits upon the throne, and that is sufficient.
