Product Description
From the leader of the smash hits Something Borrowed and Something Blue comes a novel that explores the question: is there ever a deal-breaker when it comes to right like?
First comes like. Then comes marriage. Then comes . . . a baby carriage? Isn’t that what all women want?
Not so for Claudia Parr. And just as she gives up on finding a man who feels the same way, she meets warm, wonderful Ben. Things seem too excellent to be right when they fall in like and agree to buck tradition with a satisfying, child-free marriage. Then the unexpected occurs: one of them has a change of heart. One of them wants children after all.
This is the witty, heartfelt tale about what happens to the perfect couple when they suddenly want different things. It’s about feeling that your life is set and then realizing that nothing is as you thought it was—and that there is no possible compromise. It’s about deciding what is most vital in life, and taking chances to get it. But most of all, it’s about the things we will do—and won’t do—for like.

I am a huge fan of Giffin after reading her 1st books so I was excited to pick up this one. I really did not like the main character and if it wasn’t for the supporting ‘cast’ I would not have finished it. Claudia was the most selfish person I could imagine, she gets a divorce from her spouse because she doesn’t want kids was so selfish and ridiculous.

i painstakingly loved emily giffin’s first two novels and could not wait to get my hands on her third. but, after waiting nearly a year for the new relief, i was certain that her third novel would be a continuation of the first two and it was not. though it is a quick, simple, and clean read, the tale is extremely unrealistic. i like to escape now and again, but i wasn’t expecting a fantasy. please! show me where relationships like these take place in real life.
if anyone wants to read giffin’s work, i would fervently recommend her second novel, SOMETHING BLUE. the characters are far more likeable and the tale much closer to reality.

I am so glad I got an advance copy of this book. It was so excellent I didn’t want to place it down, but I also didn’t want it to end because I was enjoying it so much. I was drawn into the tale straight away. Claudia and Ben are married and had agreed on a childless marriage. Ben, but, decides he really does want to be a dad. The marriage is tested, and both have tough decisions to make. Ben and Claudia are both likeable characters. Emily Giffin has such a fantastic style of writing that really pulls you into the characters and their turmoils. The storyline is original. I can’t wait for her next book

Claudia, a book editor, is a modern New York woman who chose at an early age that she does not want children. This choice is looked at with disdain by most people she meets, and makes it hard for her to find a relationship with a name who shares her views on parenthood. She is pleased to be single rather than settle, when she meets Ben, a handsome architect who shares her views on family tree. They elope to St. John and marry–keen to start their child-free life full of unplanned vacations, expensive dinners and unfettered freedom. Things seem perfect until two years into their relationship Ben decides that he would like children after all. Claudia stubbornly refuses to budge and, after a particularly brutal confrontation, leaves Ben and heads to a divorce lawyer.
I couldn’t help but have the impression of Claudia as a stubborn and rigid person who lives too much inside her own head. She won’t even consider that she could be incorrect and refuses to even compromise with Ben, a man she claims to like more than anything. It makes me mad that while she refuses to capitulate to Ben’s will, she basically throws herself a pity party that he would rather have a baby than be with her. I’m not adage that she has to have his kid or that it’s incorrect for her to not want children, but I do judge she needs to be willing to compromise as a replacement for of just thinking that Ben should just do what she wants.
The subplots involving supporting characters, including Claudia’s sisters, best friend Jess and coworker Michael, all served to diffuse any rage that I felt over Claudia’s behavior. Overall, I loved this novel. It’s a fantastic book to read by the pool this summer even if it was a tad babycentric for my taste.
