At the Gates of Darkness
Book Two of the Demonwar Saga
To protect their world from the savage demon hordes, the Black Sorcerer Pug and Midkemia’s clandestine protectors, the Conclave of Shadows, forged an uneasy alliance of formidable magical talents. Together, this courageous band of wizards, demon masters, warriors, and elves defeated the brutal Demon King Maarg and turned back the onrushing death tide.
But Maarg’s fall has not stopped the demonic attack, and danger now looms greater than ever before. Amid the lonely ridges of the Valley of Lost Men, in the shadows of an very ancient Keshian fortress, the fearsome demon Dahun and the mad necromancer Belasco have joined forces, making an unstoppable union of deathly black magics that even Pug and a united Conclave may not be strong enough to withstand.
Battling the Demon Legion has taken a heavy blood toll on the valiant and dedicated magician, claiming the lives of nearly all persons he likes. Though he is racked by despair and rage, Pug knows that the time for mourning must wait. Putting aside his pain, he and the Conclave and their allies—the cold-blooded master spy Jim Dasher; the fearsome young Knight-Adamant Sandreena; her ex- lover the necromancer Amirantha; two renegade Star Elves; and Pug’s extant son, Magnus—must marshal their resources against this latest threat. None can forget the dozens of worlds overrun by the demon plague and the millions of dead left behind in their wake. At the gates of darkness, where shadows hide even deeper shadows, these magical defenders will face what is sure to be the bloodiest, nastiest fight their land has ever seen. And as evil, mayhem, and dark magic are unleashed, none can predict if they—and Midkemia itself—will survive.

I have permanently been interested in magic and Mid-evil times and This book consumed me, like the demon Dahun consumed Belasco.

I will say this book was a snack when a meal was needed. The material is appealing and the characters are beloved but as I reached the last page (in 1 day) I felt unsatisfied. I can know the difficulty of coming up with new material year after year, but I personally would prefer to wait for a tale to be fully fleshed out then to get a semi-concluded tale in an anual cycle.
All that being said, Feist’s mail-in books are still better that 90% of most hack sci-fi/fantasy novels out there. Exceptions (R. Jordan(r.i.p.), B. Sanderson, M Weis, T. Goodkin, R. Knaack, R.A. Salvatore, and j.k. Rowling are all still incredible.

I reflect Feist has permanently shined when he has made an expansive battle between excellent and evil. His early works showed massive armies going against each additional. He is able to bring the reader into that, while building it very personal with a few very likeable characters. He has also been extremely excellent at making new characters that you care about.
This tale line has a couple of new characters that are likeable, but then he kills off many that I had come to like over a number of volumes. I also am very tired of the ‘demon’ tale line. He is spending way too much time on necromancy and demons. Get back to huge armies and expansive battles, where imagination, hard work and a small luck make the difference.
If you like Feist, read this. But it is not his best work

When Raymond Feist wrote the Riftwar Saga in the 1980s it became an instant classic and customary Feist as a modern fantasy master. Feist has dabbled in an out of his Midkemia world over the years but with the relief of “Rides a Dread Legion”, the first book of the Demon War Saga, it promised a return to that world and Feist’s greatest character, the master wizard, Pug. While the series got off to a levelheaded start with the first book it all comes tumbling down in book two.
Feist seems to have place very small effort into book two of the series, taking the approach of throwing as much against the wall as possible to see what sticks. There are so many characters, so many factions, so many plots that even long time Midkemia fans will be confused. When you add in all of these diverse fundamentals to a book that is ONLY 302 pages long you know you’re in distress. And this isn’t even a “packed” 302 pages. Just the opposite, in fact; the book is printed in a large than usual typeface. I compared it to a juvenile fantasy book I had nearby and the typeface was the same size. Here’s the difference: while that book (also a hardcover) is $9.95, this one is nearly three times as much at $27.99. Ouch! There’s small character development so if you’re not coming into the series with a familiarity with Midkemia you’ll likely find yourself lost.
As to the tale, after the destruction caused by the invading demon hordes, Pug has rallied the troops as it were, including his extant son, Magnus, two renegade Star Elves, the necromancer Amirantha, a roguish spy name Jim Dasher, and Sandreena (reflect female Paladin). Together they have allied with the Conclave of Shadows to try to stop the legions of demons that are led by Dahun and the mad wizard Belasco. Belasco is about the only appealing character in this tale and that’s only because he is VERY evil and completely nuts, building him unpredictable. In the first book, Feist spends a lot of time on the Star Elves who fled their world to escape the demon hordes. They settled in Midkemia but their fate is basically forgotten about in book two.
At best you have to say that Feist was just “off” on this book. At worst it was a bone idle and over-priced tale. Keep delivering books like this and Feist’s books will be coming out in mass-market first.
