I appreciate very much “The Ashley Book of Knots” .
But, I do not agree with Mr. Ashley regarding the sheet bend. There is only one way to make a right sheet bend and that is as No. 67 on page 16.
I judge that the sheet bend evolved from the square knot and that it is really the same knot. I further judge that the first sheet bend was made when “the early man” learned that his square knot was no excellent for joining two lines or ropes with different diameters. As a replacement for of undoing his square knot he secured its thinner loose end under it self and made a sheet bend according to No. 67.

I recently bought the Ashely book of knots because I thought it would tell me how to tie every knot on the planet. I establish it a bit confusing because it did not use colors to illustrate the knot ties. It was hard to follow most of the knot patterns. Also it did not have climbing knots used by most rescue people. I establish a fantastic site that does animation and colors: http://www.animatedknots.com/doublefishermansrescue/pointer.php . Perhaps if the book came with a DVD it would be better. I know it is an ancient book…but come on…we have new equipment now!

I gave this book a 4 for just one reason, a lack of detailed drawings. Although it is the most wide book of knots known to man. A must for any extreme mariner or avid boatswain mate.
