Product Description
From the moment Jeff Guidry saw the emaciated baby eagle with broken wings, his life was changed. For weeks he and the staff at Sarvey Wildlife Care Center tended to the grievously injured bird. Miraculously, she recovered, and Jeff, a center volunteer, became her devoted caretaker.
Though Freedom would never glide, she had Jeff as her wings. And after Jeff was diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2000, Freedom returned his gift. Between sessions of debilitating chemotherapy, Jeff went back to Sarvey and started taking Freedom for walks that soothed his spirit and gave him the might to fight. When he learned he was cancer free, Jeff’s first stop was Sarvey to walk with Freedom. Somehow this special bird seemed to know the significance of the day. For the very first time she wrapped both her wings around Jeff, enveloping him in an avian hug.
In March 2008, Jeff shared his extraordinary experience with his friend Gayle in an e-mail of eight hundred words:
When Freedom came in she could not stand. Both wings were broken, her left wing in 4 places. . . . We here at the Sarvey Wildlife Care Center made the choice to give her a chance at life. . . .
That e-mail would unexpectedly circle the globe and inspire countless fans keen to know more. In An Eagle Named Freedom, Jeff tells the full tale of his bond with Freedom and introduces the additional wildlife and volunteers who have been saved by Sarvey. A tender tale of hope, like, trust, and life, this moving right tale is an avowal of the spiritual tie that humans and animals share.

I read this book in three days — could not place it down. It tells one of the most remarkable tales I have ever read about a person’s relationship with another creature. The leader writes with sensitivity and respect — and sometimes, awe — of his eagle friend, Freedom. The part the bird played as the leader went through treatment for cancer is so touching. We have an eagles’ nest in my town, so I especially loved learning about how these magnificent creatures grow and live. Anyone with an interest in wildlife, especially eagles, is going to like this book.

One of the finest tales i’ve read in a long time and I’m buying a hardback to give to animal loving friends to read. I’ve bought it for my iPad and couldn’t place it down till I was done.

This a well written tale of a bonding between a wild animal and a human. Each was there when needed by the additional. It is a tale of passion, compassion and poignant moments. Even more so it is a tale of how to live compatibly with scenery. I admire the work of Jeff Guidry and stand in awe of the animals helped through the efforts of The Sarvey Wildlife Organization. The tale of Freedom, the eagle, is well done and highly recommended.

I loved this book! I was one of the recipients of the e-mail and was awe struck by the ability of an eagle and a human to form a bond. Jeff Guidry has a very down to planet writing style that describes a fantastic zeal and respect for life – all life. He writes of his personal battle with cancer with no more or less passion than any mistreated “wild one”. His wildlife rescue tales are inspiring and eye opening – leaving the reader with a different perspective of the wildlife that share our planet.
