This is a fantastic set of maps and trail descriptions, though its not much for preparation or suggesting anything in the white mountains. The trail maps are very well detailed, perfect, and having the mileage on them directly is a nice addition. The book is a hard to use for preparation, though it works for simply looking up a particular hike and reading some about the difficulty and anything you need to know to not get lost.

My last AMC guide was the 25th edition. I bought this one recently when I started hiking again after a 7 year absence. I say it’s so much better because the maps include trail milage! This makes preparation so much more well-organized. I also like the “suggested hikes” pages at the end of each section.

As others have said, this is the indispensable guide to “the Whites.” Who needs a Fifty Hikes book? The AMC Guide has thousands of hikes, and sussing them out is almost as good as being on the trail. My own version, with orange covers, was the Seventeenth Edition of 1963> it was my faithful companion when I hiked to the summits of the Four Thousand Footers and additional bits of backcountry foolishness, including a hundred-mile traverse of the White Mountains in July 1975, a tale I told in The Country Northward: A Hiker’s Journal, On the Trail in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, recently updated in paperback and as a Kindle e-book.
