So the captain killed his wife out on the ocean hoping to collect on a double indemnity life insurance policy he had recently taken out on her? But … he kills her on the yacht with a whole 5 member family tree on board. Why would he kill her on the boat with five additional people as witnesses? The premise is that he was going to say his wife went missing on the boat and must have fallen off and drowned. There must be more to the tale but that isn’t the leader’s fault.
This is one of persons tales that might permanently remain a mystery.
Also, Terry Jo didn’t see her sister in the dinghy that Captain Harvey left in. But when he was establish adrift he had the body of 7 year ancient Rene in tow. An autopsy revealed that she had drowned. He also had a tiny motor attached to the dinghy and tossed the can of gasoline and the motor overboard before he was rescued.
Rumor has it that, Captain Julian Harvey had killed a previous wife in a staged car manufacturing accident. This is a tale of a pyschopath, able to appear normal until one night at sea when he killed his wife and four members of another family tree on board. He concocts a wild tale about a sudden squall and a fire on the boat that made it sink and drown all the passengers. Except, eleven year Terry Jo survived and was rescued. A thousand heroes come to the rescue but most of their feats appear in ordinary day to day living. Terry Jo’s faith on that life ring while floating for three or four days keeps dread at bay through her suffering. Some murky details make an unsettling conclusion but what can be known is that the Captain did something unthinkable and was able to appear normal enough to get away with his crime for a fleeting while.
Terry Jo went back to her family tree’s home just to retrieve a fur pelt she had made and did not keep any momento of her mother, father, brother, or sister. The fur pelt was all she wanted from the house. Odd.
Left me wanting to know the tale from a different angle. Perhaps one with more emphasis on Terry Jo’s wait for rescue and a small more about her family tree’s dynamics. She seemed closer to her father and spent a lot of childhood in the woods by her house collecting furs from dead animals “she’d establish.” Another odd vignette.
Too many questions raised in the telling of this tragic tale that go unanswered. Three stars because it is still a fascinating read.

Oh my…what a right tale!!!
I could hardly place this book down because of curiosity, suspense and the finality at the end. Thank God she lived to write about her suffering! It is truly incredible she survived as a kid and then later as an adult!!!

I saw the interview on Today and immediately ordered the book. I read it through quickly as soon as I got it and couldn’t place it down until I got to the end. Then I read it again slowly to get details I might have missed the first time, and will now loan it to friends. It’s so heartbreaking what Tere endured, and very inspiring how she has come through unspeakable tragedy with such calmness and abiding faith. It’s simple reading, sticks to facts lacking a lot of deep analysis or extraneous wordiness to make the book larger. I highly recommend this book, it can help one keep smaller problems in perspective. Thank you Tere for being willing to share your tale. Now I’m ready for a movie – Lifetime or Hallmark where are you?

Over the years, I have regularly wondered what happened to this small girl. I was only 9 years ancient when it occurred and it left I BIG impact on me – as you can imagine. Cannot wait to read this book.

I had never heard of this incident and after reading a description of the book, looked forwards to reading it.
I was reasonably disappointed. The book is very poorly written, and the real life incident and the real life survivor never come to life on the page. The writing is so dull and disorganized and lacking drama that reading this book is a chore, and Logan, despite being a psychologist, is unskilled at portraying Fassbender’s state of mind at any point in the tale.
The book has a very amateurish feel- the whole product feels thrown together. It is hard to say how much writing , if any, was done by Fassbender, but she deserved a more able coauthor. There is a unique tale to be told here, but sadly this book fails at building it appealing.
