I am the Mike from the take in of this book, & persons insipidly cute cartoons in there are my handywork. A friend said he showd this book to a name, and when they looked at the illustrations they made involentary “awwwwwwwww” noises, the same as if you showed ‘em a golden retriever puppy! It’s bizzare, and I am not sure how it happens, but my drawings seem to turn out cute — to the point of excess. This makes the illustrated pooping instuctions something that I’m reasonably proud of, in a humble sort of way. Anyway, there a few really excellent books on camping available, but there ain’t none like this one! The information is very excellent, we worked hard for two years to make this source for ALL your backpackin’ needs. Beginer or practiced, you need this book! ‘nuf said, Mike!

This is a fantastic book if you’re new to backpacking and want to get an overview and a heavy dose of earned-on-the-trail wisdom. If you need diagrams, checklists, etc. to be comfortable you’ll need to go with one of the additional backpacking books since that’s just not the focus of this book. This book is more like having an veteran friend tell you what they’ve learned and you figure out the details of exactly how you want to do things.

I loved this book! I look through it every time I’m preparation a backpacking trip – just to make sure I’ve remembered everything and that my bag is optimally packed. Not only is it filled with fantastic information, but it’s a hoot to read – the illustrations crack me up!

I received this book yesterday, and read the whole book by dinner time! The leader, and illustrator know how to give you the information needed lacking the side effect of sleepiness.
I’m new to backpacking, and haven’t camped for about 15 years. When I did camp it was in the west coast deserts, or redwoods. I’m now in the hot and humid Georgia terrain. I was pleased to find information on all types of trips from desert to ice, and everything in between. Also there is a resource page for any information that would go beyond what they wanted to take in.
I even loved reading information I already knew. But most of all, I loved finding a bunch of information that I didn’t know.
This book is a fantastic resource for the beginning backpacker.

When I first saw this book I passed over it thinking it was kind of hoaky. My wife checked it out from the public library and I chose to thumb through it. I establish it enlightening, fun to read, loved the cartoon pictures, and very realistic! I have since bought my own copy, have recommended it to my boy scouts and their parents as a simple yet perfect guide to back packing!
