Product Description
He saw her across the Piazza San Marco and fell in like from afar. When he sees her again in a Venice café a year later, he knows it is fate. He knows small English; and she, a divorced American chef, speaks only food-based Italian. Marlena thinks she is incapable of intimacy, that her heart has lost its capacity for romantic like. But within months of their first meeting, she has packed up her house in St. Louis to marry Fernando—“the weirder,” as she calls him—and live in that achingly lovely city in which they met.
Vibrant but abstractedly baffled by this bold go, Marlena is overwhelmed by the sheer foreignness of her new home, its rituals and customs. But there are tasty moments when Venice opens up its arms to Marlena. She cooks an American feast of Mississippi caviar, cornbread, and fried onions for the locals . . . and takes the tango she learned in the Poughkeepsie middle school gym to a candlelit trattoría near the Rialto Bridge. All the while, she and Fernando, two disparate souls, erect an extraordinary life of passion and possibility.
Featuring Marlena’s own incredible recipes, A Thousand Days in Venice is the delightful right tale of a woman who opens her heart—and falls in like with both a man and a city.

I rarely write book reviews, but I had to warn people about this book. This is a prime example of a desperate, pathetic woman. If there are any really independent women out there who don’t feel so desperate for a man that they are willing to go middle across the world, don’t buy this book.

In a similar vein as “Under the Tuscan Sun” but briefer and a bit darker.
Does make you want to glide to someplace exotic to meet your own “weirder”.

I loved the book and tried to buy more but when going back to
your computer, it wouldn’t let me. Because I had changed my
carrier from [...], it kept adage I wasn’t
right……my password wasn’t right nor my e-mail take up and
there was no way I could get past all that. They suggested each
time change my password and 3 times I did just that and STILL
it kept adage I wasn’t the right person…..password and
e-mail take up didn’t jibe or whatever. I gsve up in disgust
and called Bookmans which is a chain bookstore that sells second
hand books. You really should have a name look at how your
computer responds to people. So you can see why I am not going
to go that route again as it is too time consuming and frustrating.
Sorry.

This book was soo dull. I like travel books and I like Venice so I was very excited to read this book. I place it down several times and made myself end it. I was puzzled as to why she wrote it. There was no intimacy revealed. You can’t really get into her shoes and know why she just left her life and stirred to be with a name who sounds like a perfect loser. They were appealing and this book was a dud.

Her passion is evident, but it didn’t need to be described in so many words. It was nearly an overabuse of adjectives. It’s fine to paint a picture, but it need not be the Sistine Chapel. The take in, which is spectacular, really said it all.
