Product Description
Set at a boys’ boarding school in New England during the early years of World War II, A Separate Peace is a upsetting and luminous parable of the dark side of adolescence. Gene is a lonely, introverted intellectual. Phineas is a handsome, taunting, daredevil athlete. What happens between the two friends one summer, like the war itself, banishes the innocence of these boys and their world.
A bestseller for more than thirty years, A Separate Peace is John Knowles’s crowning achievement and an undisputed American classic.

I can’t judge I have to give it any stars!! I despised this book! It’s definately one of the worst (if not THE worst) book I’ve ever read. It was so dull!! I had to read it for class and I didn’t because it was so horrible…If you ever have to read it for a class, trust me and FIND CLIFF NOTES!!!

This book is not apropriate for the current times and was very dry. The book had characters that do not fit in our period. This book would have been better if it was placed in our time because we would know the plot better.

To say the least. I really don’t know why the people who come up with high school English curriculums insist on reading books like this. There are so many better books that still fall under the “classics” category. I mean seriously, what high school kid enjoys reading Fantastic Gatsby? No one, because these books are just unadorned stupid. Uninteresting, pointless plots, these “coming of age” novels are so overrated in makes me furious. So if you’re not a high school kid and thinking about reading this just for pleasure, reflect again. It would be more pleasureable to break your kneecaps with a sledge hammer.
So why did I give it 2 stars? Well, it was pretty amusing when Finny fell out of the tree (although it was unintentional humor). And of course any time you have a character named “Leper” in a book, it’s instant comedy. Especially when he goes insane.
But additional than that the book sucks.

First, let me say that I am a lover of novels and have establish that even when I have despised a tale I still loved it because it was a… well… a novel. Well this novel changed everything for me, and for my daughter. I read enough chapters of this book to realize that it is possible to devote too many pages to describing tree branches and windows. I establish myself feeling like I had done something terrible and was being punished by the gods of pretention. My fourteen year ancient daughter chose this novel for her virtual college selection because she despises social injustice and the only additional choice this quarter was To Kill A Mockingbird. I had read some of the reviews for this novel and my daughter said that she would rather be bored than depressed. Not very far into the book she told me that she was starting to rethink her choice.
Here are some of her opinions of the tale: The book was dull, the details were overdone and the plot strayed too far too many times. I usually care when characters have something horrible take place to them but I wasn’t sucked into the plot and I couldn’t find myself caring about it when one of the characters veteran something devastating.
Now I hope you know where I was going with the title that I chose for this review: Make sure you buy an icepick when you buy the book so that you can drive it straight through your temple and relieve yourself of the boredom.

This was required reading for my 15 year ancient son and he said:
It was dull.
