Product Description
When free-spirited Skyla marries proper and predictable Thomas Plinka, she finally finds the like and stability she’s craved since childhood. She also buys a new family tree: mother-in-law Audrey, disapproving and suspicious of Skyla’s nomadic past; father-in-law Walt, gruff but kind; and Thomas’s brothers, sofa-bound Jeffrey, and Dennis, who stirred across the country seemingly to avoid the family tree.
Skyla settles into marriage and motherhood, but silent life in tiny-town Wisconsin can’t conquer feelings of restlessness. Then into her life comes Madame Picard, the local psychic from the disreputable bookstore, Mystic Books, and new national, Roxanne, whose goal in life is to have twelve kids even though she can’t manage the five she has. Despite her family tree’s objections, Skyla befriends Roxanne and gets a job at the bookstore, and life gets fuller and more intricate than she ever imagined.
Exceptionally heartwarming and inevitably bittersweet, A Scattered Life is a tale that will stay with the reader long after the last page is read.

Karen McQuestion’s novel is a pedantic tale with a slow moving plot embracing excellent ancient-fashioned values. There are three main female characters, Roxanne who is a loving and prolific mother, Skyla, a young wife with a scattered background and Audrey, the stereotype of an forward and judgmental mother-in-law.
As I read the book, I was searching for some original voice, but it seemed that McQuestion’s characters fit a certain mold and learned to be kind or loving as they overcame their own foibles or exaggerated their circumstances. I was not bored with the book but I did expect more. Roxanne’s life was the most frantic and foreboding and she left an imprint on many. This tale would have been stronger if Audrey and Skyla’s enlightenments would not have been so colorless.
I noted that McQuestion was compared to Anne Tyler. Ms. Tyler gets inside of her characters when the reader doesn’t expect it and provides profound insight. The reader starts out by believing they are reading about very ordinary people but their circumstances lead us to a deeper understanding lacking heavy drama. Sorry to say, this leader has ordinary characters who remain rather pedestrian.

Sorry….I can’t agree with most of the reviews on this one. I am an avid reader and like to support new writers but honestly, I couldn’t wait to end this book. More than once I nearly gave up on it. It’s dull and goes nowhere. I kept waiting for something to take place. Something. It’s like reading a name go through their day. Best way for me to discribe it is….It was like waiting for paint to dry! Very disappointing.

I really loved this reading this book. It is a tale of three women and how their lives interact. The writing was brilliant, the tale stirred along at a excellent pace. The plot had some unexpected twists and the characters were wonderful; they were appealing and credible with their excellent and terrible points and before long, I really cared what would take place to them.
I recommend this book and will be reading more of Ms. McQuestions’s work

It’s hard to say why this book is so excellent. It’s not action packed, but I couldn’t wait to find out what was going to take place with the every day people in this book. People are flawed, but excellent. A small weird, but not really crazy. Just like real life. I cared what happened to them, what their thoughts were and how they were going to carry on with their seemingly mundane lives. A fantastic read leaving my heart warm and full.
