Product Description
Running from terrors both recent and remembered, Noelle flees her New York mansion for the Rocky Mountains, seeking a place to hide from the men who betrayed her. Her sanctuary is a horse ranch, where she discovers support in the breathtaking scenery she paints. But as the attentions of two brothers slowly diminish the wall she hides behind, the past she yearns to escape becomes a menacing threat she cannot deny. Will Noelle find courage to give her broken heart to the One whose perfect like casts out all dread? Kristen Heitzmann skillfully makes a tale resonating with emotion and a poignant spiritual journey.

This is a complex tale about a woman with various episodes in her past that have affected her present life. When she runs from said problems she meets two men she likes and both of them want to be with her. I didn’t care for this tale for various reasons. Rick has this supposed strong faith and then decides to question Noelle to marry him after a few weeks together knowing she is not a Christian and has no desire to be. He thinks he can ‘fix’ her. Then when she leaves, he gives up his faith and everything and Morgan is the one that saves her and she responds to his kisses as well??? I do not feel any like or tie between Noelle and Rick….she’s basically using him and I had a grave taste in my mouth throughout this whole book.

I painstakingly loved reading this book but establish it missing in spiritual depth. I never truly got the sense that I was reading a novel that had a Christ-centered message. I judge this tale would have had more value to it’s readers if the Christian character, Rick, would have had a larger part to play in the lives of the additional characters. It was a excellent storyline full of intrigue, suspense, and a growing like between a man and a woman but left alot to be desired when it came to a right message of Godly hope and what it means to be a Christian in the world today. It is a clean read for persons of us who find that neccessary.

This is the 6th book I’ve read by Ms. Heitzman. I’m continually drawn to her books because her characters are truly human – with flaws like everyone else. But although this one is excellent, it didn’t live up to some of the others. I establish parts to be a small slow, and I establish it hard to judge that Rick (with his strong Christian lifestyle) would turn to a name who didn’t share his faith and showed no interest in learning more. But like I said, her characters have flaws like everyone else! Not a terrible book, but don’t let this one turn you off.

This is the third series I’ve read of Kristen Heitzmann’s (Diamond of the Rockies, Michelli Family tree) and I loved them so much (especially Diamond) that I was expecting this book to be just as wonderful. Sadly, it wasn’t. I establish the pace stirred far too slowly to fully capture my imagination and I didn’t delight in the characters as well as in her past novels. There were also some areas which I establish unrealistic or annoying.
SPOILERS
First of all, I couldn’t figure out for the life of me why the Spencer brothers (or Michael or anyone else, for that matter) went gaga upon sight over Noelle. I mean, despite the fact that she was gorgeous (which the books tells us repeatedly) and vulnerable, I couldn’t figure out what she had that they wanted. Even Michael recalled additional men wanting Noelle and he felt the need to stand guard and save her for himself. I just felt she didn’t possess anything additional than excellent looks to warrant their worship. I especially couldn’t figure out why Morgan was so bummed when Noelle didn’t return his affections. In the first place, she never gave anything back. She just took. Really, she did that pretty much with Rick too.
I felt her character was nearly as blank as her canvases with no fire or spirit or dimension — flat.
Another area that frustrated me was the theme of Noelle’s childhood kidnapping trauma which she had buried deeply within her subconscious. The books says her father had regularly wondered if she had been violated but never knew for sure. How could he not have known? She was five years ancient — not 10, not 13. I would reflect there would have been some physical proof of such trauma. Something that would have been learned during a pediatrician’s exam after she was recovered. I just establish it hard to judge that her parents never knew anything.
I thought the reason for Noelle’s rejection of God (kidnapped in a church by a man she thought was God) was clumsily done and too simplistic.
It bugged me when Rick told Noelle that God would restore her completely but he would be willing to accept a marriage to her lacking “physical like” if necessary. Now while I judge in Godly healing and restoration, counseling is vital too. I realize the leader wanted to stress God’s faithfulness here but I wish that part would have been a small more realistic and less naive (especially the part about going into a potentially sexless marriage).
END SPOILERS
I’d have to say the most compelling part of this novel for me was Michael Fallon. The leader wrote him and his mother and sister in such a way that I fully understood why he was the way he was and what motivated him. Even though he was not a sympathetic or even likable character, he was the most memorable. Heitzmann did an brilliant job here. I didn’t like the way his tale finished, though. Usually, I prefer growth and resolution in a character. Moving on, I thought the leader did a very excellent job of illustrating how Michael and then Rick/the ranch symbolized safety to Noelle until Michael betrayed her and Rick couldn’t protect her which caused her to flee in both instances.
Finally, Morgan was appealing enough to make me want to read the next book in this series. Sorry to say, the leads in this one, Rick and Noelle, didn’t really go me in any way but I won’t give up on the leader. She has the ability to inspire and go deeply. Based on some of the reviews here, I plot to read “Halos” after the second one in this series.

A Rush of Wings is one of my favorite books by Heitzmann! I like the characters and how the tale plays out. Heitzmann has the gift of showing God’s like through her tales! I could not place this book down!!!
