If you are going to step on to the Camino de Santiago, I highly recommend this guide to be part of your equipment. While on the Camino, my friend and I drew upon its information daily. Knowing how far it is to each mile-stop, whether your feet can make the distance some days can make all the difference as well as locations that offer ATMs or don’t as may very well be the case! Be warned that the leader has a trend to down play the day’s routes, particularly in regards to alternative paths! We establish that dew-laden brush paths and rough going should have been relagated to “you will get wet walking this path and the rate of climb is only for the VERY fit.” One of the secondary paths that was suggested by the book that we ongoing to follow really had local people calling to us and trying to tell us not to go that way; we soon realized why when we spent the entire morning climbing up the side of a mountain to the top of the valley. But the guide is very accurate, whether you follow the marked path or take the secondary paths offered by the book you will get there, have some advanced knowledge of your next destination, and have a marvelous journey in the process. I’m preparation to walk the Camino in 2011 – and this is THE book that has all the details.
PROS:
Brilliant information: hostels, way points, maps, and clear instructions on how to prepare. I appreciate how the writer addresses both the practical and spiritual aspects of the trip. I like that there are suggestions for which pages to remove to cut down on weight.
CONS:
Lacking pages removed, this book weighs 10.7oz – rather heavy if you’re looking to keep your pack light. I establish some of his commentary to be judgmental toward some peregrinos and a small sentimental about the “ancient” Camino. It’s not purely a travel book due to these opinions.
Overall:
Don’t go lacking at least reading this thorough, informative book. Highly recommended.

We bought the 2009 edition before embarking on the Camino Francais last May. We used the book every one of our 18 days hiking, followed the brilliant maps, and relied on the detailed information about highlights and accommodations. We encountered nothing inaccurate, misleading, or out-of-date. This is simply the best English language guide to the Camino available. And it is vastly superior to the French language guide we used on our trek in 2008. We won’t be hiking the Camino this year, but will be looking for Brierly’s 2011 edition before embarking next year.
