This was simply a horrible book. Every single man in the tale- including the godly father of the heroine- was described as a lust-driven creep with no control over their sexual urges. Please! I have many strong Christian men in my family tree who would be repulsed by a loose woman offering herself to a man sexually, and yet not a single male in this book can control himself. – Ridiculously insulting to the male gender. In contrast, the heroine was described a sweet and innocent -nearly saintly- young Christian lady. Oddly enough, our heroine drinks alcohol and dates unsaved promiscuous men- actions that are clearly against the Bible’s teachings (perhaps she has not read Proverbs??). A huge waste of time and not appropriate for the Christian fiction market.

I wouldn’t have either one of the main two guys if they came gold plated!! I’m also still looking for the “Passion most PURE” part. Seemed a small “tainted” to me.

I am the church librarian and I had complaints about this book series and the amount of sex in it. As it says on the take in of book #3 “This isn’t your mother’s inspirational fiction!”
I had to take it out of the library so as not to offend anyone.

A Passion Most Pure, is a mixture of realism and ridiculousness. It is a weird combination. The book is more realistic than additional Christian fiction in its very human portrayal of Christians with flaws, fears, and foibles. The characters from Faith to her the parents are shown to make terrible judgments, and major mistakes. One of the reasons that this book gets three stars is the fact this book does an brilliant job in delivering a message that even a name who has made some major mistakes in life can find a relationship of forgiveness with G-d. On this alone it is a readable work of fiction.
Problem is that the realistic writing of these characters make all of them hard to even like. I, at sometime in the book, wanted to “slap all of them upside the head.”(metaphorically language). I establish myself getting reasonably steamed at the character of Faith, not in her religious conviction, but in her quick ability to fall in”like.”
The plot of the book, but, provides the some of the most irksome of plot turns. It comes off more like a Soap Opera where people change partners like square dancers and characters have “Stefano Di Mera” returns from peril.
Be forewarned that this is book ONE…and in many ways the book feels like a prologue. While reasonably well place together, the plot alone may make this a novel best read from a library or bought in a bargain bin.
** A note to more conservative Christians. This novel is one of the edgy inspirational novels out there. The word “lust” is used a lot…so you get an thought of the all-purpose theme of the book.

If you like a romance with strong characters and conflict, this is the book for you. And if you like a past that carries you away and plops you in the middle of that time period, run to the bookstore now and get this book. If you like both, then A Passion Most Pure, Julie Lessman’s debut novel, will delight you.
The characters are very real. The setting, whether Boston or Ireland, is well-crafted. The conflict real. The book filled with black moments. And the ending is very satisfying while a tad bitter-sweet.
I loved this book. It’s a debut that reads like it was written by a seasoned leader. I highly recommend it!
