Product Description
Poke Rafferty was writing offbeat travel guides for the young and terminally bored when Bangkok stole his heart. Now the American expat is assembling a new family tree with Rose, the ex- go-go dancer he wants to marry, and Miaow, the tiny, streetwise urchin he wants to adopt. But distress in the guise of excellent intentions comes calling just when everything is beginning to work out. Poke agrees to take in Superman, Miaow’s troubled and terrifying friend from the gutter. Then he agrees to help locate a distraught Aussie woman’s missing uncle and accepts a generous payment to find a blackmailing thief. No longer gliding carelessly across the surface of a culture he doesn’t really know, suddenly Poke is plodding through dark and unfamiliar terrain—and everything and everyone he likes is in terrible danger.

In my opinion this book is pornographic, worse it is child pronography. It has a very weak tale line, weaker character development and alsmost no sense of place but it unnecessarily describes child torture in detail. Nicholas Kristof, the NYT columnist, has written about child abuse in Asia lacking the juicy details in this book so it is possible to expose these deplorable situations lacking pornographic detail. I am destroying my copy of the book. It was a mistake to buy it.

Skillfully melding man’s inhumanity with a peek at the dark side of Thailand, the leader holds our interest. Probably the first of a new series, this works as a fine intro to a new, feet of clay, hero.

You can write me down as a new fan of Timothy Hallanan books. I took Nail Through The Heart, by Timothy Hallinan, with me to New York and have been really immersed ever since. What a tasty thriller. I despised for it to end. Luckily I have his newest waiting for me, all I can say is lucky me.
The writing is rich, imagistic, real and touching as well as scary all at once. Powerful book, fantastic writer.

It’s refreshing to have a mystery set in an exotic location such as Bangkok. Poke Rafferty is an expatriate leader and dabbles in work as a private detective. This plot has many brilliant characters and twists. Rafferty’s girl friend who was a ex- bar girl-prostitute,the young eight year ancient street ex- female street urchin whom the couple want to adopt, a young male street hoodlum who is brought into their lives, a ex- Khmer Rouge torturer from Cambodia, bent cops, a excellent hearted murderer and a sex deviate who cruelly molested young children. This was a excellent quick enjoyable read.

Poke Rafferty, an American travel writer, is trying to make a life in
Bangkok and is hired for two different cases that keep running into one another. This book is solidly within the genre of the Hardboiled School of American Mysteries and an outstanding example of its kind. Grim and fantastic. Book one of the series.
