I’m writing a negative review for my latest Thomas Nelson book review project. While I appreciated the point of the book, which was that we should make an effort to live a more meaningful life by building choices that challenge us, the leader calls it `living a better tale’, I have to question a few questions.
Knowing that ‘Christian’ means ‘Christlike’ and that He spoke against these things in His Word:
* Why would a Christian leader choose to include sensual imagery of his teen years (pg 4, 7)?
* Why would a Christian leader say he was listening to ’spirits’ whisper what he should write (pg 81) and persons spirits suggested that he write about his character trying to have sex with his girlfriend? This wasn’t the HOLY Spirit he was listening to!
* Why would a Christian leader choose to illustrate the point of his book with a cartoon telling the tale of a father using his daughter’s vocal talents to make a better life, and this better life included ditching his ancient wife and getting a emaciated, young, new wife (pg 126 – 134)?
* Why would a Christian leader write that his desire to live a better tale made him want “some make-out sessions and perhaps a small distress with the law” (pg 98)?
Although the meat of the book was insightful, and it inspired me to live a better tale by `pointing to the horizon’ and overcoming some obstacles to get there, I just can’t neglect mentioning the fact that some of the content in this book is inappropriate, and it should have been edited out. If the writer wasn’t mature enough to know better, then the editor of Thomas Nelson, a Christian publishing company, should have taken care of it.

That was the sentiment that I felt the book “A Million Miles in a Thousand Years” by Donald Miller was trying hard to get across. Although the premise of the book is that everyone’s life is a “tale” with scenes that you can choose to make meaningful and appealing, it was hard for me to concentrate on that point. The vast majority of the tale was about “the time my friends so and so and I climbed this mountain” or “the time my friends so and so and I went on that cross-country bike ride” or how the ex-rock star who’s now a film producer absolutely BEGGED Mr. Miller to let him make a film out of one of Miller’s books. It was a non-stop brag-a-thon about all his friends and the wonderful experiences he was forever having with them. Miller also threw in a section about his life-long obsession with tracking down his missing father, only to sit like a bump on a log staring into space when he finally met his father. The book is fleeting, with several pages taken up with cartoons.There’s just not much substance.

Nobody really gets a chance to go back and edit their lives. What’s done, has been done…chapter clogged…go on. Well, nobody except Donald Miller. After having lived a life that he termed ‘lived’ and writing a book about his life, 2 movie producers choose to contact him and make a movie on his life. Exciting opportunity, yes!……but there’s a twist! An honest, sit down, one-on-one talk reveals to Donald that his life in the past was just too humdrum for an audience to watch. He’d have to rewrite parts of his life to bring spunk, humor and adventure to the full screen.
Would Donald Miller give in to the pressure and change or will he prefer to place his life, on record, ….’dull’? Read A Million Miles in a Thousand Years to find out!
If you’d like a light read and a book filled with tales, thoughts and pockets of humor pooled together then this is the book for you. Personally, this wasn’t the kind of Christian book I generally delight in reading. For me, maybe, the book’s brief was more exciting than the content and I thought there would be more in terms of levelheaded Christian encouragement and insight built in.. but this was not so.

Donald Miller’s newest relief, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years attempts to tell a tale. It’s a tale of how to live a tale really. Miller attempts to inspire the reader to re-write the tale of their lives; to refuse to settle for the mundane and change into something greater.
I struggled with A Million Miles in a Thousand Years. I establish it extremely egocentric. It seemed that Miller struggled with an accurate picture of God through-out his book. I know who Donald Miller is and realize that he is highly respected with in the “emergent church” scene. His grasp of truth, or at least his relating of it, was much like wading in the swelling tide of the ocean and feeling the sand getting sucked out from bottom your feet: I never knew if I would come down on levelheaded ground.
Miller is a excellent leader. Now, let me clarify what seems to be a contradictory statement from the above paragraph. What I mean is that he can write a excellent tale. His anecdotes were appealing – sometimes seemingly disjointed – but appealing nonetheless.
I cannot really recommend this book because I reflect that Miller missed an opportunity to take advantage of his widely read audience. He does not communicate Truth in a fashion that it could be used to change the reader’s life. As a replacement for of desiring to change my life for my sake, I wish he would have communicated the necessity to change my life for God’s glory & His pleasure

I loved Blue Like Jazz and have hoped Donald Miller had another one of persons gems hidden away somewhere in his creative mind, but so far I haven’t establish anything he has written to be even close to BLJ. In my opinion this was his poorest effort so far. I kept waiting on it to get better, to get to a larger point than just “I’m Donald and they are building a movie out of my life and they are not building me look excellent enough.” After about one-third of the way through the book I questioned a friend who had bought it at the same time as I did how she liked it and she answered that she had placed it on the shelf, unfinished. I did the same.
