Defending Her Was His Duty
Skilled with a sword and quick with her wit, Scottish rebel Claire Stuart cannot be tamed. And nothing can deter her from rescuing her beloved sister and saving them both from arranged marriages–not even the handsome Highlander who vows to protect Claire. His sweltering stare and fiery kiss bring her to the brink of surrender, but she belongs to no man…
Seducing Her Would Be His Reward
Graham Grant has had his share of lasses. But he has never met one as headstrong or as bonnie as Claire–or one with such desperate, dnagerous plans. Helping her could betray his honor, his country, and more. Graham can’t aver her. Yet everything in him says: Take her, make her yours, teach her pleasure, and never let her go.

Simply, “a highlander never surrenders” was a disappointing read.
First our heroine Claire wields a sword just like or better than any man, it doesn’t matter how much that sword would accurately weigh. She is off to save her sister from an unwanted marriage, and then she meets our hero and his sidekick. Claire is obnoxious, she is the kind of character that I dislike immensely. She was shrewish, and foolish at times. Her character becomes a bit more bearable towards the end of the book, but she is still annoying even in the end. I also thought that more could have been done to Graham’s character. While he wasn’t an unlikable character, he did come off as not very well developed. It was hard for me to see what attracted him to Claire.
It was Robert and Anne who stole the show, I thought that they were the cutest couple, I just wish that the leader had spent more time on them as a replacement for. And they are the reason I give this “2″ stars as a replacement for of “1″.
Second, there were several “sex scenes” towards the end of the book, which I thought could have easily been brought down to one or two.
Third, I establish it very hard to swallow that any reliable brother would allow his sister to lead with him in battle, as Connor had done with Claire, when we learn about her background, it was just contrived. The whole tale came off as very contrived.
Also a few phrases were constantly repeated through most of this book, that started to annoy me and jar me out of the tale, like “her nostrils flared” to clarify Claire when she is mad.
In the end, not excellent.

Claire is perhaps the most unusual maiden Graham has ever encountered, much less tried to rescue. For one thing, she hardly needs help in being rescued, additional than needing his sword to end off her foe. She is no supple miss, but a woman on a mission, to save her sister from marriage to a despised man. Graham soon finds their fates united as the two Highlanders seek both personal and national salvation for persons who are vital to them. Moreover, he finds himself, despite all his resolve, falling for her, and she can say the same about him. Although there are many reasons that they should remain apart, their hearts have additional plans.
*** If you like historicals, then you will surely delight in this. With the same fire that the beloved late Arnette Lamb brought to her Highland set tales, Ms. Quinn describes a passionate, loyal people willing to sacrifice all for what they like most. ***

I really loved this book. There was a lot of humor, much of it from the bawdy gang of Scots that are the supporting characters. The main character, Claire is a sassy warrior lady. I reflect she’s a bit like a blonde, Scottish Xena. I liked the “Mr & Mrs Smith” dynamic where the hero & heroine are at each additional’s throats but attracted to each additional.

To start off…..I loved “Laird of the Mist.” But I did not like this one. I did not like the Heroine; I thought she was way too aggressive. I don’t mind a strong female leads, but her Zena image was a small too much to swallow. Yes, there was sex in this box, but it lack passion. I don’t judge this book deserves 5 stars. What a bring shame on, I had high hopes for this one.

I reviewed Laird of the Mist, her first in this series, and loved it. I had heard this one wasn’t as excellent. I don’t agree. I truly loved the tale of Claire Stuart, the girl with long flaxen blonde hair and clear blue eyes who grew up a tomboy to become her brother’s best warrior, and Graham Grant, the Commander of the MacGreggor Clan, a warrior who never wants to marry and keeps all the bar wenches pleased in his bed. Claire and Grant come together like two colliding comets in a time of Scottish history where there is treachery and unrest in England as well as Scotland. There is something about a surrender to like of two strong unwilling hearts that just grabs you. And Quinn does a masterful job of telling the tale, weaving in humor in a very natural way, witty dialog and quick moving action that does not disappoint. I had just finished a not so fantastic romance by another leader and couldn’t wait to get back to a really excellent one…thank you Paula Quinn for yet another wonderful highlander romance, even if it did keep me up till 2 am reading it! You got me as a devoted fan.
