The book is well written. There is excellent character development. The leader does a lot to erect anticipation that by the end of the book you will learn something. You do but there is more anticipation than results. I learned a lot about the Jewish culture but that wasn’t why I selected this book. Had I wanted a history lesson I would have selected a history book.
Fortunately this wasn’t a long book, had it been my disappointment would have been greater.

Well it’s basically competently written and there are sentences that are crafted well and make you appreciate the writing at times. Ultimately though, this book goes nowhere and just feels like an overly dramatic journey from A to B as a replacement for of A to Z which it should feel like considering the weaving taking place. How many unfortunate life events and desperation can you heap on a person within one tale and yet you still don’t really care.
I also have to mention that very rarely do I feel insulted when I read a novel. It’s Fiction and I realize it’s art but this leader seems to have something about people with diabetes. Is she repulsed by it? One of persons people who reflect having diabetes is permanently the patients fault? At one point she writes something about the “expiration date” that is in the medical chart of people with diabetes. It’s delivered with disgust and sticks out from the page. From the rest of the book. All I could reflect was “Boy, this woman really despises people with diabetes”. It just came out of nowhere. I was offended. It soured the book for me and when she did it again later in the tale to a lesser extent but nevertheless, did it again, I nearly place the book away. Honestly I should have.

A compelling novel that feels reminiscent of something Jodi Picoult would pen, Grodstein’s book centers on a successful doctor whose son drops out of school and gets involved with his best friends troubled, alienated daughter. The book while mostly successful to me, built with a sense of dread to a climax that felt justified, but a fallout that felt a bit fake. Still, an extremely well written book, with well drawn and straight away relatable characters, especially for persons readers with children.

The suburban narrator belies the number and breadth of perfectly drawn characters. Even the most marginal character has a fascinating back tale. Sorry to say, the plot slogs along until an impossible and inexplicable implosion. An accusation surfaces that is absurd agreed the number of doctors in the “suburban set piece”; the repercussions that follow ring hollow. Still, the characters are what drive the book.
