Here is the second volume in GEORGE R. R. MARTIN’S magnificent cycle of novels that includes A Game of Thrones and A Storm of Swords. As a whole, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill these pages and transport us to a world unlike any we have ever veteran. Already hailed as a classic, GEORGE R. R. MARTIN’S stunning series is destined to stand as one of the fantastic achievements of imaginative fiction.
A CLASH OF KINGS
A comet the color of blood and flame cuts across the sky. Two fantastic leaders—Lord Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon—who hold sway over an age of enforced peace are dead, victims of royal treachery. Now, from the very ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns. Six factions struggle for control of a divided land and the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms, preparing to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war. It is a tale in which brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel…and the coldest hearts. For when kings clash, the whole land trembles.Amazon.com Review
How does he do it? George R.R. Martin’s high fantasy weaves a spell sufficient to seduce even persons who vowed never to start a doorstopper fantasy series again (the first book–A Game of Thrones–runs over 700 pages). A Clash of Kings is longer and even more grim, but Martin continues to provide compelling characters in a vividly real world.
The Seven Kingdoms have come apart. Joffrey, Queen Cersei’s sadistic son, ascends the Iron Throne following the death of Robert Baratheon, the Usurper, who won it in battle. Queen Cersei’s family tree, the Lannisters, fight to hold it for him. Both the dour Stannis and the charismatic Renly Baratheon, Robert’s brothers, also seek the throne. Robb Stark, confirmed King in the North, battles to avenge his father’s execution and retrieve his sister from Joffrey’s court. Daenerys, the exiled last heir of the ex- ruling family tree, nurtures three dragons and seeks a way home. Meanwhile the Night’s Watch, sworn to protect the realm from dangers north of the Wall, dwindle in numbers, even as barbarian forces gather and beings out of legend stalk the Haunted jungle.
Sound intricate? It is, but fine writing makes this a painstakingly satisfying stew of dark magic, complex political intrigue, and horrific slaughter. –Nona Vero

Excellent wishes, fantasy people. Prepare to be blown away by this horrible book! Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but personally, I judge this is the worst fantasy book I have ever read! I selected it up after reading a rather excellent fleeting tale be George R.R. Martin in Legends, a compilation of fantasy and science fiction fleeting tales. It was a waste of a excellent ten dollars! (several weeks of allowances). Never have I read such atrocious material. All it revolves around is cruelty, treachery, gore, and too many confusing twists! Twists and copious characters are fun; it was an appealing writing style, but too much is too much. After the first few chapters you are left absolutely bewildered with the plot and character changes. Emotional development is at an all-time low, all you can tell is happening is sadness and dread – and, oh yes, how could I forget, pain! There seems to be constant pain in this book! Factually, folks, I could not make it half way through this book lacking adage, “Look, I’ve had enough of this. Jeez, what a waste of money!”

The book is SORRY and I’m SORRY I wasted my money on it. It’s like a terrible comedian that stoops to explicit dirty jokes and cussing to be amusing – but he’s not – he’s just yucky. It’s that kind of sloppy fiction that relies on inhuman grit that isn’t “reality” as professed by some, but a sorry world of sorry people with no real hero’s that could ever drag that world from the slime. I have NO desire to visit or read past page 50. In the words of Frasier
Winch, “Pardon me while I go poke out my mind’s eye.”

I am so glad that I was agreed this series (up to Feast of Crows) and did not buy it myself. I am not pleased about starting a series based on the number of excellent reviews from additional people. I WILL NOT MAKE THAT MISTAKE AGAIN. This book is so terrible in my opinion that I stopped reading Clash right in the middle of the book. I am still debating with myself whether I will ever end the book based on the new information I researched regarding Mr. Martin. My concerns are not more than:
1) I personally judge that he will never end the series. Mr Martin is in his 60’s and from his pictures, he doesn’t look like he is physically fit. Why start a series when there is no ending? I know this is a small harsh, but from what I read in this series, Mr. Martin understands severity.
2) Too many dull characters. I don’t want to read anymore about Sansa, Catelyn, or Bran. I nearly want to skip over the dull characters and just read the passages with Tyrion, or Jon
3) Too darned depressing. Can the excellent characters get some POV time. Why isn’t Robb POV included in the books?
4) Main Characters are too young or are women. Grown men are following children and women. Too many instances where the leaders of whole kingdoms are women or children. Does Mr. Martin have something against MEN!!
5) Fiction not Fantasy. Please clarify how this is fantasy and not just unadorned fiction?
6) Politics, Politics, Politics. I wanted to read a fantasy novel with some fighting action. I was sorely disappointed. I am not a fan of politics which is what this novel and a Game of Thrones are about.
I am going to rush out and get the new novel by RA Salvatore (Ghost King) so I can get this terrible taste out of my mouth. I wasted time and energy with this crap.

This book took me an entire 3 months to read, just because it was so dull. War, war, death, burning, war, and more war, sums up this book. If you want to read this series.. I suggest skipping this book altogether, unless you delight in extremely long accounts of war, more war, pain, mayhem, and endless, utterly long sequences of death. The additional two books in the series so far are alright, but this book is worth skipping entirely. The whole book drags terribly, and I had a hard time finishing it because I honestly disliked it so much, and so small was happening except for the above. George needs to learn how to seperate a fantasy from a made-up past novel, with all the treacheries and evils and pain of right war.. and that’s what this book reads like. NOT a pretty tale at all.

This writer really knows how to write! The book has all the fundamentals of a excellent tale, but, it is depressing to read. This reminds me of a excellent architect crafty and building a fine structure as grand as the Stark’s Winterfel, which people admire, but upon looking closer, the building blocks are made of compressed garbage. For all its fine design and craftsmanship, after awhile, it starts to stink. I would plead with the leader to use his considerable talent to make something uplifting, maybe even inspiring. There are sources. In real life there are heroes who are excellent (not perfect), and smart and flexible and selfless. Like and sacrifice are as excellent for a tale as lust and vengance!!!
