Product Description
This book chronicles the unforgettable account of one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. It is the tale of Dave Pelzer, who was cruelly beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother: a mother who played tortuous, unpredictable games–games that left him nearly dead. He had to learn how to play his mother’s games in order to survive because she no longer considered him a son, but a slave; and no longer a boy, but an “it.”
Dave’s bed was an ancient army cot in the basement, and his clothes were torn and raunchy. When his mother allowed him the luxury of food, it was nothing more than spoiled scraps that even the dogs refused to eat. The outside world knew nothing of his living nightmare. He had nothing or no one to turn to, but his dreams kept him alive–dreams of a name taking care of him, loving him and calling him their son.
Amazon.com ReviewDavid J. Pelzer’s mother, Catherine Roerva, was, he writes in this ghastly, fascinating memoir, a devoted den mother to the Cub Scouts in her care, and to some extent nurturant to her children–but not to David, whom she referred to as “an It.” This book is a brief, horrifying account of the bizarre tortures she inflicted on him, told from the point of view of the leader as a young boy being starved, stabbed, smashed face-first into mirrors, forced to eat the contents of his sibling’s diapers and a spoonful of ammonia, and burned over a gas oven by a maniacal, alcoholic mom. Sometimes she claimed he had violated some rule–no walking on the grass at school!–but mostly it was pure sadism. Inexplicably, his father didn’t protect him; only an alert professor saved David. One wants to learn more about his suffering and its aftermath, and now he’s written a sequel, The Lost Boy, detailing his life in the foster-care system.
Though it’s a grim tale, A Child Called “It” is very much in the tradition of Chicken Soup for the Couple’s Soul and the many books in that upbeat series, whose leader Pelzer thanks for helping get his book going. It’s all about weathering misfortune to find like, and Pelzer is an practiced witness.

THIS IS THE WORST BOOK THAT I HAVE EVER READ! IT IS SO BORING AND DULL. THE GRAMMAR IS SO BAD IN THIS BOOK. IT’S JUST SOME STUPID ACCOUNT OF CHILD ABUSE. IT IS SO DEPRESSING. I DON’T EVEN WHY PEOPLE LIKE THIS DUMB BOOK SO MUCH. I THINK IT’S BECAUSE THEY FEEL SORRY FOR THE LITTLE BOY. PEOPLE TRY TO COMPARE THEIR LIFE TO THIS “IT.” THEY SHOULDN’T DO THAT BECAUSE THIS IS CHILD ABUSE, AND IT IS A “CRIME.” A LOT OF KIDS DON’T GET ABUSED, AND EVEN IF THEY DO, IT’S NOT THIS WAY. YOU MUST REMEMBER THAT THIS WAS THE WORST ACCOUNT OF CHILD ABUSE IN CALIFORNIA HISTORY. SO TO SUM IT UP, THIS IS A DUMB BOOK.

I establish this book repulsive. All it seemed to be was “child abuse for dummies.” It just seemed to list a number of forms of child abuse, and then ends it with a sappy cliche. The book just was one cycle, repeated through each chapter, with a different set of circumstances. This book is all shock value and I’m sure I’ve offended a number of you by deigning to be dissatisfied with a book about child abuse, but it is my personal opinion to skip this one and read a diffent type of book if you’d like to be depressed, like Orwell’s “1984″

This book is so yucky! Dave Pelzer’s mom, makes him eat poop from Russel’s diaper! Plus she makes him throw up hot dogs and then eat them! But you should read this book anyway! It was a fantastic book! I loved this book! It was so excellent! Plus Dave Pelzer’s mom stabs him! And hits him in the face! And punches him! And puts dishwashing soup in his mouth! And makes him do dishes in scalding hot water! And smashes his face against the mirror! And makes him lay in the bathtub naked! And burns his arm over a gas oven! Read it anyway if you like Dave Pelzer as much as I do!
