Translated by V. Harris. Japan’s answer to the Harvard MBA…Written over three centuries ago by a Samurai warrior, the book has been hailed as a limitless source of psychological insight for businessmen-or anyone who relies on strategy and tactics for outwitting the competition.Amazon.com Review
To learn a Japanese martial art is to learn Zen, and although you can’t do so simply by reading a book, it sure does help–especially if that book is The Book of Five Rings. One of Japan’s fantastic samurai sword masters penned in decisive, unfaltering terms this certain path to victory, and like Sun Tzu’s The Art of War it is applicable not only on the battlefield but also in all forms of competition. Permanently observant, making confusion, arresting at vulnerabilities–these are some of the basic principles. Going deeper, we find suki, the interval of vulnerability, of indecisiveness, of rest, the briefest but most vital moment to strike. In succinct detail, Miyamoto records ideal postures, blows, and psychological tactics to place the enemy off guard and open the way for attack. Most vital of all is Miyamoto’s concept of rhythm, how all things are in harmony, and that by effective with the rhythm of a situation we can turn it to our advantage with small effort. But like Zen, this requires one task above all else, putting the book down and going out to practice. –Brian Bruya

The things Musashi says in this book are well thought out and are right. But today in America there is no use for this book and worse no way to apply what I teaches in our modern American society. So way to incorporate it or drain all of its knowledge out if you don`t join so underground samurai clan and practice the Art of the Way in a Dojo or something. I can`t use anything in here. not Practical today. Useless.,

This book was full of ramblings of an ancient man and will make small sense to anyone reading.

There is nothing that you can possibly gain from this book that you cant from The Art of War. It is not a fun read, and if your goal is to apply it to business or any additional walk of life, you will only be able to do so loosely. Read Sun Tzu, read Machiavelli, but dont read this. Im glad I didnt buy it.
A 2 because, like 5’s I dont give out 1’s except rarely. Im sure that the book was well regarded in very ancient Japan, but it is useless to our era.

Musashi manages to fit into about 100 pages the perspective of Oriental thinking. He works out a system which is a considerable oracale. All is one to him and this is, although sometimes hard to admit, his vehicle of success. One with the eastern philosophy of natural order Musashi puts into a very tiny literature a heart of iron and a spirit of fire. Maybe he will be refined yet.

The Book of Five Rings is indeed a fantastic book to read. It has many functional applications that we can use even to this date.
