Product Description
A historian debunks four-dozen PC myths about our nation’s past.
Over the last forty years, history textbooks have become more and more politically right and distorted about our country’s past, argues professor Larry Schweikart. The result, he says, is that students graduate from high school and even college with twisted beliefs about economics, foreign policy, war, religion, race relations, and many additional subjects.
As he did in his well loved A Patriot’s History of the United States, Professor Schweikart corrects liberal bias by rediscovering facts that were once widely known. He challenges distorted books by name and debunks forty-eight common myths. A sample:
• The founders wanted to make a “wall of separation” between church and state
• Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation only because he needed black soldiers
• Truman ordered the bombing of Hiroshima to frighten the Soviets with “atomic diplomacy”
• Mikhail Gorbachev, not Ronald Reagan, was reliable for ending the Cold War
America’s past, though not perfect, is far more admirable than you were probably taught.

Schweikart wrote a lousy, factually inaccurate and provocative book. For example, his assessment of Gorbachev is patently absurd. The Soviet leader did indeed end the cold war and had been rebuffed over StarWars at Reykjavik. After Gorby went to the G7 summit, the West turned their backs on him and the Soviet Union collapsed. I would certainly reflect that the U of Dayton would be a last choice place to study history with a neo-con idiot like Schweikart on its staff. Hey, US News, you need to downgrade the university some more. (Of course, if they do have knowledgeable and distinguished faculty – more liberal and not automatically lefties, then I make an apology.) Schweikart is obviously an idealogue. Read something enlightening like “Terrible Money” or “The Shock Doctrine” to know why this so-called professor is flat incorrect.

This is the most incredible piece of garbage I have heard since the last time I listened to Rush Limbaughzo. That there are a number of people who agree with this small missive of massive misinformation is simply astonishing!

Well. He’s both right and incorrect, but I’d like to know how he a) says liberal bias and b)PC.
.. many people did in fact die to Columnus. And any additional European colonization. So uh.. at least one of his “lies” is truth.
.. Whatever, it’s a political revisionist book aynwya. Do not recommend for actual history.

silly bunch of uninformed, uneducated trash from a partisan lamebrain with a gigantic ax to grind.
If you judge the New Deal (!) was the end of the Republic, by all means buy this inaccurate bit of trivia and rub around in the mud with all ten of your compatriots.
If you have any sense, take a history course as a replacement for.
At the very best, call this nonsense Preaching to the Choir.

This book, while it is written by a professor, is not history. It is a superficial,right-wing attempt to rewrite history. Some of the “facts” the reader will learn are: McCarthy was really an honest anti-Communist stalwart who was basically on the mark (a “historian” really uses right-wing polemicist Ann Coulter as a source!), global warming is a fiction, Bush won in 2000 honest and square, etc… If you like Sean Hannity, you’ll like this book (that wasn’t a compliment,Professor).
The leader attacks a straw man when he goes after the “liberal” lie that the Civil War was not fought over slavery. What liberals judge that? Name one, Professor. The people who have recently advanced that thesis are paleolibertarians like Thomas DiLorenzo–mostly from the Mises Institute. If they’re liberals, this was a fantastic book.
