The Womens Murder Club returns in a shockingly suspenseful thriller. Plunging into a burning townhouse, Detective Lindsay Boxer discovers three dead bodies…and a mysterious message at the scene. When more corpses turn up, Lindsay questions her friends Claire Washburn of the medical examiners office, Assistant D.A. Jill Bernhardt, and San Francisco Chronicle reporter Cindy Thomas to help her find a murderer who vows to kill every three days. Even more terrifying, he has targeted one of the four friends. Which one will it be?

I read his books as soon as they come out and waited with baited breath for this one as I loved the first two in this genre. I was disappointed. First, I didn’t find the character development which was so fantastic in his additional books reasonably as believable in this book. Second, I didn’t see what spousal abuse had to do with the tale, and when Jill was killed, I couldn’t figure out why (in the long run). I liked her character and looked forwards to her in future books. I like the “out there” plots, but in the past everything has fit together.
It would be nice if our small star would get married.
I know he can’t bring Jill back, but hopefully he doesn’t kill off any additional vital parts.
Sorry! But I’m waiting for his next Alex Cross novel. And I’ll probably buy it the day it comes out and read it straight away and forgive him for this one.

BANG! goes the bomb, and the windows blow out, flames reaching desperately out into the air. “Oh My God”, says Lieutenant Lindsay Boxer, rushing lacking a thought into the burning house to heroically save any helpless San Francisco citizens inside.
“We despise capitalism,” muse the terrorists. “Who shall we target next? (Hey, how about that leader whose publishing machine makes millions of dollars every year? Patterson something, isn’t he called?”) A brief moment later, the members of the Weepy Ladies Club start to weep on one another’s shoulders as another body is establish horribly murdered. “Oh my God”, they wail in unison, “these are innocent people they’re killing! Innocent! Hey, Jill what are persons bruises on your arm?” they question, concerned. She makes some excuse about falling in the shower. They sense the approach of an improbable, sensationalist sub-plot. Suddenly, a message is learned! The evil terrorists are declaring war on greed and corruption, and calling themselves the “August Spies”. “Oh my God,” exclaims Lindsay Boxer, “this is terrible!”
“By the way,” interjects Patterson (or is it Andrew Yucky?), shouting all the way from the take in of the book, “One of my best-loved heroines…”
“Eh?” interrupts Lindsay in amazement, “Best-loved? Us?”
“Yup, rumor has it that. As I was adage…in 3rd Degree one of my best-loved heroines is going to die. Which one will it be?” He leaves in a blood-red puff of smoke, failing laughably to make any atmosphere of suspense.
Sorry about all that…I reflect I’m drowning in the lack of respect I have for this book; although how anyone could drown in the absence of anything is neither here nor there. Normally, I can at least appreciate these books for what they are: cheap thrills packaged for an undemanding mass audience. Not any longer, I don’t reflect. 3rd Degree is Patterson’s shortest book so far, yet weighs in at a ridiculous 111 paragraphs (there is no way they could classify as “chapters”) which make the experience of reading it feel distinctly like skimming even though I read every single word, and it positively reeks of the greed which bore it. Sensationalism is piled upon further sensationalism. Here we have not only domestic abuse (wholly improbable, terribly dealt with) but terrorism as well! How’s that for topical, eh?
James Patterson novels have finally become parodies of themselves. I’m not sure how anyone on planet could read this book in any kind of serious way. The characters are laughable; not even cardboard, they’re just shadow puppets all of the same vague shape. As I’ve said before, no one can lower a character to mere proper-nouns and pronouns with more ease than James Patterson. Once again, his use of the exclamation mark – the literary equivalent of gasping at your own bombshell, or laughing at your own joke – had me in titters, making entirely the incorrect effect. If a scene is dramatic, we will know it, Mr Patterson. Provided that the book is well-written enough, of course. Oh, irony of ironies. The use of the exclamation mark only emphasises our awareness of the fact that this is pseudo-dramatic trash desperate for attention, for some kind of effect. While the first two books in this series were excellent enough by his standards, this is possibly a step too far. And the sheer hypocrisy of this book, which seems to have some sense of an anti-capitalism message, just made me mad when the being and purpose of this book is considered in its context. Although it has its moments and is thrilling enough at times, I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone (well, if truth be told, I wouldn’t really recommend any Patterson to anyone.) At least we have something to be thankful for, though: it’s not as terrible as The Lake House.

This book was fantastic. I have the unabridged CD. This really thrill me. The sound effects were awesome. Way to go James.
I was but so disappointed when we lost Jill. So now where do we go from here. We really got the 3rd Degree in this book.
I like all the ladies in the Women’s murder club. So now lets get to the 4th is a charm. I can’t wait. I read 1st to Die and
2nd Chance. So I had all the information on all the ladies.
Keep up the excellent work. I have most of your books in hardcover. And some of the books I also have on CD and tapes. I also like that in some of the audio books you have two readers. It adds much suspense to the tale. I collect all your books.
Thanks for keeping me in suspense and this was a real page turner.
Thanks

I never thought I’d see the day when a James Patterson book, could place me to sleep. What a colassal bore!!! He sold out the Women’s Murder Club and place in this dribble with Lindsay falling in like – what?? One of the girls is gone forever and I establish myself adage “so what?” How promising he made them in the first 2 books. Mr. Patterson really missed me with this one. That means that he will have to earn my trust again. The next book of his that comes out, I will pick it up from the library – not spend my hard earned on it. I’m pulling for the next book. He has so entertained me in the past.
