When a small girl is shot on the steps of a San Francisco church, Detective Lindsay Boxer knows it’s time to reconvene the Women’s Murder Club. Effective with reporter Cindy Thomas, assistant DA Jill Bernhardt, and medical examiner Claire Washburn, Lindsay tracks a bewildering killer who soon turns his pursuers into his victims. The unorthodox allegiances of the Women’s Murder Club lead them to suspect the unexpected – the killer may be an ex-cop. But nothing could prepare them for the demented logic behind his choice of victims…Amazon.com Review
2nd Chance reconvenes the Women’s Murder Club, four friends (a detective, a reporter, an assistant district attorney, and a medical examiner) who used their networking skills, feminine intuition, and professional wiles to solve a baffling series of murders in 1st to Die. This time, the murders of two African Americans, a small girl and an ancient woman, bear all the signs of a serial killer for Lindsay Boxer, newly promoted to lieutenant of San Francisco’s homicide squad. But there’s an odd detail she finds even more disturbing: both victims were related to city cops. A symbol glimpsed at both murder scenes leads to a racist despise group, but the taunting killer strikes again and again, leaving deliberate clues and eluding the police ever more cleverly. In the meantime, each of the women has a personal stake at risk–and the killer knows who they are.
2nd Chance speeds along at a Formula One pace through many forceful curves, but unlike recent entries in the Alex Cross series, it doesn’t sacrifice excellent characters to a twisted plot. Lindsay’s the star, but there’s a fine esprit de corps among the four women, who are even better developed here than in the first book. What makes them both convincing and appealing as a criminal-justice juggernaut is their willingness to stick their necks out, even if they suffer for it. If you haven’t selected up a James Patterson novel in a while, this is a fantastic time to start anew. –Barrie Trinkle

I was cringing while reading this. The dedication is to a physician (one must assume a medical examiner) and, were I in her shoes, I’d question to be removed from the dedication. The medical examiner in the book states that she did a position in dermpath. Nope. No can do. There is no position in DERMpath, only a one year fellowship following a four (or five) year straight pathology position. (And the ME doesn’t even mention her forensic fellowship.) Secondly, Lindsay and the medical examiner refer to a person as being hung (suicide, folks). Pictures are hung, people are hanged. How much did they pay this editor for not doing his/her job…??? It’s insulting to the reader.

This is a feminist novel through and through. I `ve never aspired to be one and anyone who is makes me very irritable. Get off your man hating horse, ladies. Tale is not terrible but female circle thing ruins it for me completely.

Second in his line of the novels about the group of women, and another fantastic read. Well loved, much more appealing then the Alex Cross books I must admit.

just to make the plot work. Not very realistic. If you want a pragmatist cop character, try Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch.

WARNING: SPOILER OF 1st TO DIE…DON’T READ IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THAT BOOK YET
Hi,
Quick question because I am a small confused about the inclusion of Jill in the second book in the series…didn’t she die in the first and was buried??? Wasn’t her spouse an abusive jerk??? Both of persons fundamentals seem to have been conveniently forgotten in this book. A name please tell me if I’m right or if I have lost my memory.
Thanks.
