I bought myself a Dutch Oven and thought it would be nice to complement with a book on how to use it. I plotted on integrating it into my new smoker and also I’ve heard they’re fantastic for chili, beans, roasts, etc. Well, this morning I ongoing to prep my first meal, and with a smoked brisket, I thought a fantastic addition would be pinto beans (please see photo of pinto beans on the front take in of the book!). Well, I find it odd that this book has factually no recipe for pinto beans! Even the take in has a picture of a Dutch Oven filled with beans, but inside, nothing!!!! Yes, I know, chili, etc, but still! I realize beans are simple, but if you have the picture on your take in, you should have at least 1 recipe. Additional cookbooks of the same genre have several recipes on beans. C’mon Vern! Major mistake!

My spouse and I are avid kayakers and campers. A friend of ours exposed us to the joy of dutch oven cooking about 10 years ago and the first meal we had was lasagne- which was AWESOME! When you’re camping every weekend from Aril to October you get sick of the tradional beans, chili, hot dogs, cornbread, etc. This book really is a must have for persons who want to really delight in cooking outdoors! Fresh bread & rolls, breakfast casseroles, cabbage rolls, and poached pears…come on–this book is fantastic for the wilderness foodies out there. Best of all, because it’s point on the number of coals needed and the temperatures you’re cooking with, it makes making your own recipes so simple. We do alot of the prep work at home (mixing the dry ingredients in ziplocks & labeling them with the measurements of the additional items we need to add, really saves us a lot of time. I highly recommend it to anyone, new or veteran, who really wants to delight in meals made over a fire.

This was on my college-age son’s Christmas wish list. He is very keen to get out into the campgrounds of the Pacific Northwest and use his many outdoor cooking skills learned while becomming an Eagle Scout. This Dutch Oven is a perfect size for two to four people, and the cast iron will be sure to hold up for many, many years while he builds camping memories. It’s a excellent value.
