Product Description
With a dash of humor and a dollop of science, Michael Kuo selects the top 100 mushrooms best suited for cooking. Like Kuo’s very well loved book Morels, 100 Edible Mushrooms is written in the leader’s unique, engaging, and appealing style, taking the reader on the hunt through forest and kitchen in search of mycological pleasures and culinary delights.
Kuo describes in detail how to identify each species, where and when to find them, and how to cook them in creative and tasty recipes. The mushrooms open in the book are the most regularly eaten varieties, and a description of the button mushrooms establish in the grocery store is included. All of the mushrooms have at least one full-color illustration and some several more to aid in identifying and distinguishing look-alike and nonedible species.
An indispensable book for mushroom hunters, naturalists, and cooks
Michael Kuo, an English teacher in Illinois, is the developer of mushroomexpert.com, a well loved online resource for mushroom identification and morel hunting.

I like the book; but didn’t learn a lot of new stuff from it. I did a PhD in micro; and I’ve been foraging for mushrooms for over forty years. Don’t get me incorrect, there is a lot of excellent information in this book….for a name who is just getting ongoing. Kuo just doesn’t go into enough detail for my tastes.

This is a gorgeous book that is a wonderful addition to my collection of mushroom books. The large, full color photos are especially appreciated.
I do not judge that it is suitable for a beginner because the narrative descriptions are not concise enough to rule out identification mistakes — particularly in keen newbies who may try too hard to make a mushroom fit the descriptions.
If you want beginner-to-intermediate concise, foolproof keys for avoiding poisonous mushrooms, get David Fischer’s Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America.
But if you want to expand your knowledge of mushrooms and delight in reading well written and sometimes entertaining mushroom lore in simple-to-know unadorned English, you will like this book.
All the measurements are metric. Since my brain refuses to make the conversion, I read the descriptions with a ruler that features inches and centimeters in hand.
The section on poisonous mushrooms is especially excellent, and the Focus Points are fantastic.
Highly recommended.

Very well written book. Very simple to read and entertaining; but, I would not use this book as the only source when identifying mushrooms. Not enough scientific data in the book.

Entertaining, excellent photos/descriptions of edible mushrooms and look-alikes, well-organized, nice introductory information for beginners. Makes an brilliant supplement to a more all-purpose guide.
